Video: Darnell McDonald Breaks a Car Window

Written by Ian on .

There's a pretty good chance when you park in the parking lot on Lansdowne St. behind the Green Monster at Fenway Park that you might have a broken window if there's a home run hit over it. And that's exactly what happened on Tuesday night when Boston Red Sox left fielder Darnell McDonald came to the plate in the 4th inning.

McDonald's blast ended a string of eight in row retired by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Jered Weaver and also broke a window in a car parked in the lot.

Here's the "glass shattering" home run by McDonald for you to enjoy:

Jered Weaver (L), Clay Buchholz (R)

After a 10-game road trip that saw them go 5-5, the Boston Red Sox return to Fenway Park for a nine-game homestand that begins tonight with a three-game set against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

This evening's game will start at 7:10 p.m. and will be shown on NESN in the Red Sox television market. If you live in the Angels television market, you can catch the game on FOX Sports West. If you can't catch the television broadcast, you can always listen to the game on the 2010 Red Sox radio network.

Clay Buchholz has been the most consistent starter for Terry Francona and the Red Sox this season. In 20 starts, Buchholz is 13-5 with a 2.49 ERA. He's made two starts against the Angels this season and is 2-0 with a 3.55 ERA (5 ER/12.2 IP). Overall in his career, Buchholz is 3-2 with a 5.16 ERA in five starts.

The American League and MLB strikeout leader Jered Weaver will toe the slab tonight for the Angels.  In 25 starts, Weaver is 11-7 with a 2.87 ERA and has gone at least six innings in his last 16 starts. He's faced the Red Sox once this season back on July 27th where he took the loss after allowing two runs over seven innings. Three Huskies Named To 2010 Butkus Award Watch List

Written by Ian on .

As the preseason award lists continue to come in, we find three more UConn Huskies football players on a list. This time around, linebackers Scott Lutrus, Lawrence Wilson and Greg Lloyd have been named to the 2010 Butkus Award watch list.

Butkus AwardInstituted in 1985, The Butkus Award® is one of the elite individual honors in college football. This year, The Butkus Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization, takes stewardship of the award and comes home to Chicago to fully realize the original purpose of honoring athletic achievement and service to the community while honoring the nation’s best high school, college, and professional linebackers. An independent Butkus Award Selection Committee, headed by Pro Football Weekly’s Hub Arkush and comprised of 51 experts including professional, college and high school scouts, and prominent sports journalists, will conduct the selection process.

Derrell Smith and Doug Hogue from Syracuse are the only other members of the Big East to place someone on the list.

As we already know Lloyd won't play this season as he's not fully recovered from the knee injury that ended his 2009 season.

A redshirt senior and two-time captain, Lutrus has played in 34 games in a Huskies uniform. He's made 282 tackles with 4.5 sacks and five career interceptions. He missed parts of the 2009 season with a stinger injury but is healthy and ready for 2010.

An All-Big East first team selection and another redshirt senior, Wilson led the team in tackles in 2009 with 140 and also garnered five sacks. He's played 39 games in a UConn uniform and has 326 career tackles to go with six sacks and four interceptions.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 8/17

Written by Ian on .

Boston Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia, left, and manager Terry Francona talk in the dugout before a baseball game against the Oakland Athletics in Oakland, Calif. , Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

While the Boston Red Sox were off on Monday, general manager Theo Epstein and the baseball operations department were busy taking care of signing their unsigned draftees. And it was a highly successful day for them as they were able to get seven picks under contract including a few who they thought were unsignable.

Anthony Ranaudo, a sandwich pick by the Red Sox out of LSU, came to terms right before the 11:59 p.m. deadline for a cool $2.55 million. It was thought the Red Sox weren't going to be able to sign Texas Longhorns pitcher Brandon Workman, a second round pick, but they came to terms on a deal that gives Workman an $800,000 signing bonus.

Shortstop Sean Coyle, a University of North Carolina commit and the Red Sox' third round pick, signed for $1.3 million. LSU commit and fourth round draft choice Garin Cecchini signed for $1.31 million and immediately made a $20,000 to the Jimmy Fund.

It was also thought the Red Sox had no shot of signing their seventh round pick Chris Hernandez out of the University of Miami but they came to terms with the left-hander pitcher on a $375,000 signing bonus. They picked up their eighth round pick Matthew Price out of Virginia Tech for $415,000.

And the Red Sox closed out their signings with Lucas LeBlanc, another LSU commit. A centerfielder, LeBlanc signed for $500,000 after being drafted in the 11th round for the Red Sox.

Overall a great day for Epstein and the baseball ops department as they were able to restock the farm system with some great talent.

Dustin Pedroia will be giving himself the ultimate 27th birthday present tonight as he'll make his return from the disabled list after breaking his foot on a foul ball in San Francisco. The Red Sox will be looking for Pedroia to provide a big spark to the offense as they continue their quest for a postseason spot. Dustin Richardson was optioned back to Pawtucket on Monday to make room for Pedroia on the 25-man roster.

We'll be back later with tonight's starting lineups, batter/pitcher matchups, any news and links from the day but for now enjoy the overnight links.
