Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi Take Home 2010 ESPYs

Written by Ian on .

ESPYsThe UConn Huskies women's basketball team is used to winning and not losing like they did at Wednesday night's 2010 ESPYs at the Nokia Theatre LA Live in Los Angeles.

The UConn women's basketball program had garnered eight nominations for the ESPYs but only came away with two.

Former Husky and current Phoenix Mercury star Diana Taurasi was named as the Best WNBA Player. And if you blinked at all during the ESPYs telecast, you missed Maya Moore being named the Best Female College Athlete. Moore also won the award in 2009.

But like always, I've got you covered with the video:

If you missed the telecast, I definitely suggest you try to catch at least the opening part and Seth Meyer's monologue. Absolutely hilarious. Also be sure to check out the presentations for the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and the Jimmy V Award for Perserverance. Both of those moments were very moving.

RIP George Steinbrenner 1930-2010

RIP George Steinbrenner 1930-2010

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away at the age of 80 on Tuesday after suffering a massive heart attack at his home in Tampa, FL.

Steinbrenner may not have been the most liked person here in Red Sox Nation but he commanded a respect like none other. He brought the rivalry between the Yankees and the Boston Red Sox back to the forefront engaging in many different types of battles. He did so much for the game and the cities of Tampa and New York that it would take forever to list.

So whether you like or hate Steinbrenner, today is a sad day in the world of baseball

Our condolences go out to his family, friends, the entire Yankees organization and Yankees fans on their loss. The Big Stein will be greatly missed.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 7/13

Written by Ian on .

Monday's festivities at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game kicked off when New York Yankees skipper Joe Girardi chose Tampa Bay Rays pitcher David Price and deservedly so as the starter for the AL All-Star Team over Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester. Then Girardi made an announcement that Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre would not be playing in the game and would be replaced by Michael Young of the Texas Rangers.

Of course this turned out to be news to Beltre who was told about this upon his arrival. It was Beltre's understanding that he would do some jogging and take part in the work out before ruling himself out of the game. And at the end of it all, Beltre is playing in the game tonight after declaring himself fit and ready to go.

ANAHEIM, CA - JULY 12: American League All-Star David Ortiz(notes) #34 of the Boston Red Sox poses after winning the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby during All-Star Weekend at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 12, 2010 in Anaheim, California. (Photo by Lisa Blumenfeld/Getty Images)The night ended with David "Jose according to Bobby Valentine" Ortiz taking the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby crown with an 11 home run performance in the finals.

For Big Papi or Jose Ortiz, it's was an emphatic FU to the folks who had/have written him off after his very slow start to the 2010 season. He's turned around his dismal season and is once again the feared Big Papi. You know the one who gets intentional walks because no one wants to pitch to him.

And even before winning the Home Run Derby last night, he told reporters that he wants a contract extension to stay in Boston:

"I'm going to tell you, I ain't going nowhere,'' Ortiz said while sitting in the third-base dugout at Anaheim Stadium before winning Monday night's All-Star Home Run Derby, in his fourth try.

"I don't want one year. Why should I return for one year and go through the same [stuff] I'm going through now, just because it's my last year? No. I like to be left alone when I'm playing baseball. I know how to clean my [stuff] up.''

The Red Sox hold an option on Big Papi for $12.5 million for next season with no buyout. It's going to be very interesting to see how this plays out over the course of the offseason because I just don't see Theo Epstein giving him an extension during the season.

That's it for now. We're out for the day so for now enjoy the overnight links after the jump.

Video: Who The Heck Is Jose Ortiz?

Written by Ian on .

ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine has been around the game of baseball for a long time so you would think he knows the player's names. After all, isn't it his job to know them especially if he's going to announce them.

Well when it came time for him to make his choice during the 2010 State Farm Home Run Derby last night, Valentine went with Jose Ortiz. Of course Chris Berman and Joe Morgan didn't correct him, they just let him keep going.

At least Bobby V. picked a winner last night as his pick Jose Ortiz otherwise known as Boston Red Sox DH David Ortiz won the Home Run  Derby with 11 home runs in the finals over former Red Sox farmhand and current Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez.

Here's the video of Valentine calling him Jose Ortiz for your enjoyment:

At least after watching this, people will understand why we may continue to call Big Papi "Jose Ortiz".
