Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 6/22

The Boston Red Sox are heading back to the scene where they clinched their 2007 World Series title as they prepare to take on the Colorado Rockies in a three-game set. For the guys who were on the team in 2007, it's a chance to remember the good times. But for the 2010 team, it's a chance to keep the good baseball going.
The Red Sox are coming off of an 8-1 homestand which saw them take 2-of-3 from the Philadelphia Phillies and sweeps of two NL West foes in the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers. They've been scoring a ton of runs and also have gotten some great starting pitching. Now they'll look to continue that success against the Colorado Rockies.
Two of those starters providing the most excellent pitching could find themselves in Anaheim for the 2010 MLB All-Star Game. Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz are definitely worthy of All-Star consideration when it comes time for the players and Yankees skipper Joe Girardi to make their decisions.
With the way the voting is going, it's going to take an executive order from President Barack Obama to have any Red Sox starters in the All-Star Game. Unfortunately, President Obama is a Chicago White Sox fan so that's not going to happen.
The only thing that can be done right now is for us as Red Sox fans to keep voting and voting as many times as we want. Otherwise we'll have to rely on the players and Girardi to get guys like Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Beltre, Victor Martinez and David Ortiz into the game.
Speaking of All-Stars, the Red Sox will definitely have their hands full on Wednesday night when Rockies starter Ubaldo Jimenez takes the mound. Jimenez has been dominating the National League as he's made fourteen starts and boasts a record of 13-1 with a 1.15 ERA. Of course if your just a casual baseball fan, you've probably never heard of him since the Rockies aren't exactly a national team right now.
But trust me after Wednesday night, you'll know who he is. Let's just hope the Red Sox can break through against him.

Back in early December, the UConn Huskies men's basketball program picked up a 2011 recruit in Maurice Harkless out of Queens, NY. And now it seems all the recent trouble with the NCAA investigation into Nate Miles and Josh Nochimson may have caught up to them.
According to Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv, Harkless has decided to decommit from UConn and has decided to reopen his recruitment.
“I want to just reopen my recruitment,” Harkless told SNY.tv exclusively Monday morning by phone. “I just want to make sure UConn is still the right choice and explore my other options.”
He also says that the investigation is only a small part of his decision but I really think it's the main reason why. Why would he want to go to UConn if they were say banned from the postseason? While that may not happen, it could so why would a kid want to take that chance.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. My best guess is we'll have to wait until the NCAA hands down it's punishment on the Huskies.

AL All-Star Voting Update - 6/21
Unless a major miracle occurs, it's quite likely that we won't be seeing any Boston Red Sox players in the starting lineup at the 2010 MLB All-Star Game in Anaheim on July 13th.
With the latest totals coming out today, we only find Dustin Pedroia near the top in voting at second base and he trails Robinson Cano of the New York Yankees by roughly 1.1 million votes. Last week, Pedroia trailed Cano by around 800,000 votes.
First baseman Kevin Youkilis is in 4th place and trails leader Justin Morneau of the Minnesota Twins by roughly 900,000 votes. Third baseman Adrian Beltre is in 4th as well and is around 1.9 million votes behind Evan Longoria. Catcher Victor Martinez is in 3rd but has no chance of catching leader Joe Mauer of the Twins as he is 2.6 million votes behind. Same goes for designated hitter David Ortiz, who sits in 3rd, as he trails leader Vladimir Guerrero of the Texas Rangers by 1.6 million votes
None of the Red Sox outfielders are in the top 15 of the voting.
So fans of Red Sox Nation, it's time to vote Red Sox across the 2010 MLB All-Star Game Ballot. You're allowed 25 votes per email address so go to yahoo or gmail and make multiple emails up and then vote. Let's make a push to get at least one Red Sox starter in the All-Star Game.

Boston Red Sox News & Notes - 6/21

Clay Buchholz and the Boston Red Sox spoiled the return of Manny Ramirez to Fenway Park as they were able to complete the sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers to close out an 8-1 homestand.
That 8-1 homestand has propelled the Red Sox right back to the top of the AL East as they now sit just one game behind the New York Yankees for first place. They are in a virtual tie for second place with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox are also tied with the Yankees for the most wins in MLB but are one game behind because they've played two more games than the Yanks.
It didn't look like it was going to be a good night for Buchholz in the 1st inning as the Dodgers loaded up the bases with just one hit due to command issues for Buchholz. But he was able to rebound by striking out Garrett Anderson and got Casey Blake to ground back to him for the final out.
He allowed a hit in the second but from there was outstanding. His long first inning with 30 pitches kept him from going longer than he should have as he went 6 2/3 innings. He set down 11 straight Dodgers before an Anderson ground rule double in the 7th. He got the next two outs before he hit Blake DeWitt with a pitch. That would end his night and Daniel Bard came in and bailed him out by getting Jamey Carroll to ground into a fielder's choice.
For Buchholz it was his 10th win of the season which ties him for the most in the American League with David Price of the Rays and Phil Hughes of the Yankees. It's likely that one of these three could be the starter in the MLB All-Star Game and you should see these three on the roster.
The catalyst of the offense last night was Dustin Pedroia who had three of the seven hits by the Red Sox last night. But it was his heads up baserunning in the 1st inning that really turned the game around.
Pedroia had reached on an infield single with one out. And with the Dodgers in the shift for David Ortiz, Pedey stole second and Russell Martin's throw went past second base to Casey Blake who backing up the throw. Noticing no one was at third base, Pedroia took off for third as no one was covering and he slide in safely. This was key as they decided to intentionally walk Big Papi and then Pedroia came in on an excuse me check swing infield single by Kevin Youkilis.
That was an MVP play by Pedroia and it really set the tone on a night where hits were hard to come by off of Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda who struck out nine.
The Red Sox are off today as they make their way to Colorado for a three-game set with the Rockies that starts tomorrow before heading to San Francisco to finish up interleague play.
