With the American League All-Star team voting winding down on Thursday at 11:59 p.m. EST, Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury still finds himself sitting on the outside looking in at a starting spot.
Last week, Ellsbury found himself trailing Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers by 173,000 votes. This week, Ellsbury trails by just 121,000 votes. Injured Red Sox OF Carl Crawford sits in fifth and trails Hamilton by 875,000 votes while J.D. Drew is a distant 10th 1.7 million votes behind.
Adrian Gonzalez has increased his lead over Mark Teixeira by about a million votes and unless something kooky happens, he should be the AL starting first baseman. The same goes for David Ortiz who leads Michael Young by about two million votes for the starting DH position.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia finds himself in fourth at catcher but is 1.2 million votes behind Russell Martin. Dustin Pedroia is still in second at second base but is 1.8 million votes behind Robinson Cano.
Kevin Youkilis sits in third place about a million votes behind Alex Rodriguez at third. And finally, Marco Scutaro remains in fifth at shortstop as he trails Derek Jeter by 2.2 million votes.
I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to vote, especially for Ellsbury. He’s had a heck of a season and deserves to be the starter. So do whatever you can to help him get there.
